I know how to play American Mahjong with tiles. Is it different with cards?

We like to say: The Deal is Different, but the Game is the Same!

Use your Play Away Mahjong Cards to play traditional American Mahjong the same way you would with tiles! Shuffle the deck, pick a dealer, deal 13 cards to each player (dealer gets 1 extra for a total of 14!), then start the Charleston! No tile wall to push out necessary - simply draw from the deck in the middle of the table!

Each deck comes with a full instruction guide to play both Traditional American Mahjong as well as beginner-friendly Quick Play game formats! Plus, get your littles involved in the game with our fun Mini Mahj ideas!

I DON'T know how to play American Mahjong with tiles. Am I going to be lost?!

Have no fear!! Each deck of Play Away Mahjong Cards comes with a full instruction guide to play both Traditional American Mahjong as well as beginner-friendly Quick Play game formats! Plus, get your littles involved in the game with our fun Mini Mahj ideas!

Do I need anything besides my Play Away cards to play?

No accessories needed (rack, playing mat, shufflers, etc!) to play! With that said, if your hands are feeling a little cramped - check out our Wooden Card Racks which free your hands up for quick calling and discarding (and Bird Bam cheers-ing!).

Jump straight in to the game with Quick Play format and grab your NMJL line cards (if you've got them!) to play Traditional American Mahjong. Good news for Traditional players - our box is designed large enough to fit 4 standard-sized cards! Let's go!

Are the cards just for travel?

No!! We designed them for 'Play Away' but have found ourselves using them at home just as often as when we're on the road ('Stay and Play' anyone?!).

Our designs and instruction guide make it easy for beginners to feel like pros and the simpler deal means you can start playing even faster!
